Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng, born 21 November 1985 in Malaysia, is an actor and comedian. Chieng is
currently the senior correspondent of The Daily Show on Comedy Central. He also
created and stars the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student, that debuted
on ABC Australia (Australia) in 2017. Chieng was born to a Malaysian Chinese
couple in Johor Bahru (Malaysia). Chieng was educated in Singapore and in the
United States. He lived in Manchester, New Hampshire, from 1989 until 1994. Chieng
performed with Trevor Noah in 2013 at a comedy festival in Melbourne,
Australia. Chieng was offered the Daily Show's correspondent position two years
later. In July of 2016 Chieng was named one of the 10 Comics to Watch by
Variety In October of 2016, Chieng appeared on The Daily Show to share his
response to a Jesse Watters Fox News segment thought to be racist by a large
majority of viewers. Chieng spoke in expletive-laden terms concerning the
segment of the Fox News, a conservative news network. Chieng also revisited the
city's Chinatown in which Watters had mocked residents and conducted more
respectful interviews in Mandarin and Cantonese. The video became viral and was
covered by the Washington Post and Slate In his youth, Chieng was a Singapore Sea
Scout. Although he has been living in Australia for more than 10 years, he
doesn't have a permanent residence or citizenship status in Australia. In the
year 2018 Chieng made a joke about being unfriendly on the Daily Show however,
he afterwards, he clarified that he was "100 percent not afraid of
dogs".
